Inspiring and entertaining audiences since 1976, Scugog Choral Society continues to promote amateur, artistic talent and enrich the cultural life of the community through musical productions. Last spring, Brigadoon marked Scugog Choral Society’s 31st consecutive year of musical productions, the first being H.M.S. Pinafore in 1976. Established with the inspiration of Grace Hastings, SCS is a non-exclusive, varied group of people who enjoy musical theatre and contribute their varied talents and spare time to make it happen. The result is the best musical community theatre you will find anywhere.

Under its volunteer Board of Directors, Scugog Choral Society presents two musical productions annually. We strive to bring unrivaled musical productions, including choral performances, original Canadian revue style shows written locally and Broadway blockbusters to the stage of Town Hall 1873. SCS members hail from Port Perry and the surrounding area and the results are always wholly professional.

Scugog Choral Society welcomes everyone to join our active community performing arts group and participate in our productions, whether on stage, back stage or behind the scenes. Sponsors and patrons are encouraged to contact Ardith Wood (info@scugogchoralsociety.ca) to become a valued supporter of the arts and “Give the Gift of Musical Theatre” to our community.

Our history Just over 25 years ago, Town Hall 1873 was destined for destruction. Grace Hastings was one of a group of concerned citizens who successfully saved the building. During restoration, tickets and programs from a 1913 performance of H.M.S. Pinafore were unearthed and the Town Hall Board of Directors decided to stage this musical once again as a tribute.

Portrait of Grace Hastings

Grace, a member of the Town Hall board, retired music teacher and consultant with the Ontario County Board of Education, was their obvious choice for director. The Town Hall was packed to the rafters for every performance with people being turned away at the door. It was Grace's love of music and dedication that formed Scugog Choral Society.

"So much fun. So many laughs. So much accomplished. So many beautiful sounds." Grace Hastings, My Journey to the Millennium

As well as supporting community groups, the SCS provides bursaries to the local high schools for graduating students who intend to continue their education in music.

Years ago, the Scugog Choral Society established a fund to be used to create a youth choir. To celebrate our silver anniversary in 2001, we founded a youth choral group, The Port Perry Children’s Choir. Their inaugural year exceeded all expectations. Now named the Choral De Lites, they reflect their roots, the parent group, Scugog Choral Society, and the former SCS youth group, the Millar Lites. And in 2007, SCS is proud to be sponsoring their latest endeavour - their youth musical theatre programme.
